Ms. Sneed Teaches Capitalizing Dates
“Ugh!” Our favorite fourth grade teacher laid down her pen and held her head in her hands. Why weren’t her students capitalizing dates? After all, this capitalization rule was so easy!
Just then, she heard a knock on her door. “You okay?” asked her teaching partner, Mr. Frank.
“Yeah. It’s just these papers. My kids aren’t capitalizing days of the week or months.”
Mr. Frank nodded. “I know what you mean. Same trouble in my class. But I found something that helped.”
Ms. Sneed sat up straight. “Please share! I need to start teaching capitalization rules.”
Capitalizing Dates with Online Instruction
After sitting down at the table, Mr. Frank pulled Ms. Sneed’ laptop in front of him. With a few clicks, he found what he was looking for. “Fortunately, I saw this set of 15 capitalization lessons on Teachers pay Teachers. With these Made-for-Easel Activities kids work independently.”
He turned the laptop to face Ms. Sneed. “Here, watch this short video on capitalizing dates. As you can see, kids review on their own. Then they practice with a few activities. Everything is online. Better yet, you don’t need to do anything. Just share the link, and away they go!”
“Wow,” said Ms. Sneed. “What a great solution to the capitalization problem!”
Ms. Sneed’s Students Work on Capitalizing Dates
A few days later, Ms. Sneed stood in front of her class. “Today,” she said, “you will learn about capitalizing dates. I’ve sent you a link. Now the learning is all up to you.”
Her students looked at her with surprise. Then they grabbed their Chromebooks and got busy.
Immediately they noticed that a teacher’s voice would lead them through the lesson.
First, they learned the capitalization rules for days of the week and months.
Then they moved on to guided practice. For each date shown on the screen, they choose thumbs-up (correct) or thumbs-down (incorrect). The module provided immediate feedback.
Finally, they practices more. In one activity, they sorted common and proper nouns. For the second, they simply checked correct or incorrect for given dates.
As Ms. Sneed walked around the silent room, she smiled. These Made-for-Easel tutorials gave her a little break. And soon, her students would be capitalizing dates in their daily work.
